In today’s blog post, we’ll be taking a trip down memory lane, exploring the state of roller rinks in the country over the past two decades. We’ll delve into what has changed, the passionate groups keeping the roller skating scene alive, and how we, as enthusiasts, can contribute to its resurgence.
Twenty years ago, roller rinks were the epicenter of socialization and entertainment for many people, young and old. Back then, the number of roller rinks across the country was significantly higher, with thousands of venues providing a lively atmosphere for skaters to glide, dance, and have fun.
Fast forward to today, and the number of roller rinks has diminished considerably. A combination of factors has contributed to the decline, including rising real estate costs, competition from other forms of entertainment, and shifting cultural trends.
Despite the decline in roller rinks, the roller skating scene is far from dead. Thanks to dedicated groups and organizations, the spirit of roller skating continues to thrive. Various roller skating clubs and organizations, such as the Roller Skating Club of America (RSCA) and United Skates of America, have been working tirelessly to promote and preserve the roller skating culture. These organizations often host events, workshops, and competitions, creating a sense of community among roller skating enthusiasts.
As a black woman who grew up in the world of skating, I can say with full confidence that the sport and those who participate don’t always give credit to other cultural groups who have played an important role in not only roller skating culture but in helping to carry it through some of it’s lowest periods. So I’d like to use this section to pay a little tribute to a culture that has impacted so many different aspects of our shared cultures throughout the world.
Roller skating has deep roots in the African American community, with rinks often serving as safe spaces for socializing, networking, and organizing during the Civil Rights Movement. These venues provided a platform for self-expression, unity, and empowerment.
The black community has made a significant impact on the roller skating scene through their distinct style, dance, and artistry. Popularized in the 1970s, ‘jam skating’ is a blend of roller skating, breakdancing, and gymnastics, and has been widely embraced by the African American community. This fusion of movement and music has become an essential part of the roller skating culture.
Many black-led skate crews and groups have emerged over the years, organizing events and meetups that celebrate roller skating and foster community connections. These crews often showcase their unique styles and skills, attracting a diverse audience and inspiring new generations of roller skaters.
Some notable events organized by and for the black community include:
RollerCade: Established in 1955, RollerCade is the oldest African American-owned roller rink in the United States. It has been an essential part of the Detroit roller skating scene and serves as a hub for events, competitions, and social gatherings.
Skate Jams: All around the country, skate jams have become a popular way for the black community to come together and celebrate their shared love for roller skating. These events often feature music, dancing, and impressive displays of roller skating skills.
Documentaries and films: The black community’s impact on roller skating has been the subject of documentaries and films such as “United Skates” (2018) and “Roll Bounce” (2005), which not only pay tribute to the culture but also raise awareness of the challenges faced by roller rinks and the need for their preservation.
Members of the black community have been at the forefront of advocating for the preservation of roller rinks and promoting the cultural significance of roller skating. Through activism and grassroots campaigns, they have brought attention to the importance of these spaces for both historical and social reasons.
By raising awareness, engaging in dialogue, and supporting initiatives aimed at preserving and revitalizing roller rinks, the black community has played an integral role in keeping the roller skating culture alive.
The black community’s unwavering passion for roller skating has had a lasting impact on the sport, and their contributions have been invaluable in keeping the roller skating scene vibrant and diverse. As roller skating enthusiasts, we should recognize and celebrate these accomplishments, and work together to ensure that roller rinks and the roller skating culture continue to flourish.
By supporting roller rinks, participating in events, advocating for the preservation of these spaces, and actively promoting the roller skating scene, we can work together to create a bright future for this beloved pastime. Let’s join forces to revive the roller rink culture, and share the joy of roller skating with future generations!
As roller skating enthusiasts, we all have a role to play in reviving the roller skating scene. Here are some ways you can contribute:

Advocate for new roller rinks: Reach out to your local government representatives and community organizations to express the need for more roller rinks in your area. Explain the social, physical, and mental health benefits that roller skating provides to individuals and communities.
Start a roller skating group or club: Organize a local roller skating group or club that meets regularly to skate, socialize, and support each other. This can help create a vibrant community and encourage new skaters to join.
